Obituary for Simon McGauley, Sr

Simon Edward McGauley Sr. died at his home in Huntsville, Alabama on Monday, January 9, 2023. He was born on January 27, 1946, to Mayor and Mary Helen McGauley. Simon was the thirteenth of eighteen children. He gave his heart to the Lord at an early age at his home church in Black Shear, Georgia.

In 1964, Simon Sr. moved to Jacksonville, Florida, to attend a two-year business college. Some of his friends from school invited him to attend a tent meeting. In 1965, he united in fellowship with the Seventh-day Adventist church in Jacksonville, Florida, where he met Elizabeth Helen Wells. They married on June 23, 1968 and remained married for 54 years.

They moved from Evanston, Illinois to Huntsville, Alabama in 1971. Simon attended Oakwood University, then Oakwood College. He majored in Theology with a minor in Music graduating in 1977. After graduating college, he joined the Singing Men of Oakwood College and sang with the group for over 20 years traveling around the world including Africa and Europe.

Simon McGauley started his own ministry – “Wonderful Words of Life” where he shared free religious literature throughout the community. Simon McGauley shared information about Jesus with as many people as possible so they could come to know the love of God. He was a faithful Deacon, lay evangelist, and servant of God.

Simon and Elizabeth McGauley were blessed with four children – Simon Jr., Mary, Marcus, and Sabrina. He leaves to cherish his memory his two sons Simon Jr. and Marcus (Courtney) McGauley; his two daughters Mary and Sabrina (Derrick) Henry; two brothers Dewey and Nathaniel McGauley; one sister Gloria Welsey; two brother-in-laws Charlie and Slyvester Wells; one sister-in-law Margurite Wells; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other friends and family.

Thank you for taking the time to remember the life of a father, a husband, a brother, an uncle, a Deacon, and an individual who loved to talk about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
